Toddlers & Young Children

We create custom solutions for toddlers and young children that are tailored to their size and medical requirements

Most children are fragile; they should not be given the standard doses or artificial dyes found in many commercially manufactured medications. They require treatment tailored to their size and medical requirements. This is where a compounding pharmacy enables physicians to provide such customised therapies.

Common Challenges for Children

Some ways that you can look at ensuring compliance of medicines include

Toddlers: Try an eyedropper or dosing syringe. Very young kids (under 6) are the hardest to reason with, and more likely to spit medicine out, so this may be a good approach for them. This involves dropping the medicine into your child’s cheeks, or behind the tongue. This works particularly well with young children since their instinct is to swallow.

Young Children: Reason with them. When they’re a bit older, you can explain to them the effect medicine has on their health. You can explain that while the medicine may not taste good, it helps to clear up sickness and make kids feel better. It may also be worth explaining this again after your child begins to show signs of good health.

Toddler and young children lack of compliance to taking medication

Children often have problems with the way a medicine is administered, how a medicine may taste or simply have negative experiences with medicines and as a result, compliance becomes a major problem with parents.

At Kingsway Compounding, we can help overcome the compliance issue by creating a dosage form that promotes a child to want to take their medicines.

An example is making tablets and capsules into pleasantly flavoured liquid preparations for accurate dosing and administration in particular for children that can’t swallow tablets due to dosing or having g-tubes.

Allergies, sensitivities and painful conditions

If children have any allergies or sensitivities, then Kingsway Compounding can create medications free of problem-causing excipients such as dyes, sugar, lactose, preservatives or alcohol. Similarly topical creams and ointments can be compounded for dermatological ailments and painful conditions.

We can also compound custom-made capsules that have the exact dose of medication prescribed, without the added dyes or allergy causing fillers and suppositories or topical gels for treating nausea and vomiting when you can’t take anything orally.

Specialist procedures and required medicines

There are some highly specialised procedures, such as heart transplants, that require specialist medications to ensure that the new organ is not rejected. These are currently only available in capsule or tablet format, which are suitable for adults and pose a problem for children (as the commercially available dose is too high). At Kingsway we can compound the same medicine in a different form and at a dose that is safe and effective for children.
